About this work

Description

The records include minutes, diaries, loose photographs and illustrations, correspondence, commemorative history and publications. They fall into two main groups: the archives of the Pilgrims themselves, and material accumulated by particular Pilgrims, including Dr Clifford Hawkins' files on their history. There is also a group of items relating to Sir Arthur Hurst, the society's founder.

Acquisition note

The majority of these papers were given to the library at Wellcome Collection in October 1998 by Professor Stephen Tomlinson of the Department of Medicine, Manchester Royal Infirmary, in his capacity as Honorary Secretary of the Pilgrims. Items A.7-8 were added in 2011-2012, also by Professor Tomlinson. Accession 2198 was given by Professor Tomlinson in July 2015 and is currently uncatalogued.

Biographical note

The Medical Pilgrims were founded in 1928 by Sir Arthur Hurst. There was a chosen membership of 20 and they made annual visits to foreign and British cities. (Lists of the various "Pilgrimages" may be found in SA/PIL/B.3/2.)
