Biographical note

Chain was accepted as a student at Fitzwilliam House (as it then was) in 1933, when he was working for his Ph.D. with F.G. Hopkins. The connection, made at such a time, meant much to him. When the non-collegiate Fitzwilliam House received its Charter of Incorporation as Fitzwilliam College in 1966, the Governing Body unanimously elected Chain as an Honorary Fellow. He proposed the toast of the College at the Annual Dinner in 1967 and also gave the Inaugural Lecture of the 'College Centenary Lectures' in 1969 (see G.88)
