About this work

Description

Correspondence concerning Board Minute, 153 (vi) relating to a new Tuberculosis Testing and Research Unit.

Includes "Memorandum from the Research Panel to the Board of Directors on the Requirements for a Tuberculosis Testing and Research Unit and its Relation to the Proposed Biological Institute," which begins: "Having been advised of the inadequacy of biological testing facilities for the numerous substances made in TRC Laboratories in connection with pooled research on anti-tubercular substances (Panel Minute 212b), the Board agreed (Board Minute 153vi) that in principle there must be adequate facilities for such testing."

Also, a copy letter of some length from T R G Bennett (Wellcome Foundation Ltd) to Dr T B Maxwell (May & Baker Ltd) concerning the scope of TRC pooled research: "As you know there have been, and still are, difficulties in connection with the definition of subjects for pooled research. These appear to have been accentuated by the fact that, of the first two subjects selected for pooled research, Penicillin has been defined in terms of substances and the Chemotherapy of Tuberculosis has been described by reference in the first place to a disease without any limiting reference to the nature of the particular substances to be investigated."
