Biographical note

Initially known as the Finance and General Purposes Committee, from 1900 this was known mainly as the Finance Committee, although periodically it was referred to as the Finance and Staff Committee. In Mar 1961 it became the Finance and General Purposes Committee again, empowered to deal with urgent matters between meetings of the Council. In May 1972 the Finance and General Purposes Committee was wound up and replaced by a 'General Committee', which was termed the Executive Committee from Jul 1975.
