Biographical note
Alston, Edward Richard (1845-1881), zoologist, born in Lanarkshire. In February 1863, Alston became a member of the Natural History Society of Glasgow. Alston's main area of research was the study of the osteology of the Mammalia. Alston is famous for the fact that he achieved so much in such a short life. He died at the age of 36 of acute pulmonary tuberculosis in 1881. A full description of his life and work is to be found in the Dictionary of National Biography.
