Biographical note
This fund was introduced in 1925 to provide retirement pensions for long-serving Queen's Nurses. Originally funded by a levy on affiliated associations of £3 per annum for each Queen's Nurse employed, the Fund was greatly strengthened in 1926 by the allocation of half the money collected as the National Memorial to Queen Alexandra (see G.8). From the beginning, the scheme excluded nurses retiring on a `suitable' income, and from March 1944 it was not available to nurses not already in the scheme and payments were restricted to `cases of real need' only. Nurses were encouraged to join the Federated Superannuation Scheme, which had been founded in 1928. The Diamond Jubilee of the Institute saw an appeal to augment the Long Service Fund (see G.10).
