Improvement in Neck-compresses or Appliances for the External Treatment of Throat-complaints. I, Karl Rudolf Leupold, Engineer, of Nordstrasse 45, Zwickau, in the Kingdom of Saxony, do hereby declare the nature of this invention to be as follows: — This invention relates to means for the external application of steam or heat 5 to the neck for curative purposes. This invention has for its object, to provide a curative device, which is adjustable so as to suit various sizes of neck and which may be applied to any desired part of the neck. In the accompanying drawings Fig. 1 is a plan of a neck compress consisting 10 of two parts hinged together. Fig. 2 is a plan of neck compress composed of two adjustable parts, and Fig. 3 a plan of a three-sided neck compress embodying my invention. The improved compress chiefly consists of metallic hollow bodies a connected directly or indirectly by means of hinge joints or analogous means. 15 Each of these bodies serves as a heat reservoir filled with hot water or other suitable materiaL A piece of wet cloth or felt is laid on the inside of this body, and a piece of dry wollen cloth is laid on the wret cloth, and made to envelope the entire apparatus, after which the apparatus is laid against the neck and fastened by 20 means of straps r. The heating medium in the interior of the hollow body then causes the water in the wet cloth to evaporate, and the vapours, thus formed, penetrate through the wollen envelope to the neck. For steaming only one particular part of the neck, only one of the said hollow 25 bodies a is charged with hot water or other heating medium, and applied to the part to be treated. In Fig. 2 the hollow bodies a are made to slide along a hoop c, until they occupy the desired position and then fixed by set-screws. The hoop c is provided with a hinge joint. 30 Each of the hollow bodies a has a fill opening, and a screw-plug for closing the same. I Dated this 31st day of May 1904.
