About this work

Description

A series of files mainly comprising the working files and papers of Linda Lamont (a historian by training) who became Director of the Patients Association in 1987. Lamont joined at a time when the Association was expanding and increasingly involved in representing and promoting the interests of patients to the government, professional bodies and the media. She was particularly active in organizing the meetings of the Patients Forum, established in 1989 to co-ordinate the exchange of views and ideas of various organisations concerned with the consumer point of view.

This group of files mainly reflects the Association's corporate identity and activities, particularly involvement of the Association's leadership in professional pressure group activities and contribution to national health policies and government initiatives. The Association's interaction with the public as a self-help group providing advice and information is not covered by this material.

Arrangement

This section is arranged separately from sections A-J since it was structured in an entirely different manner. This separation rather than integration reflects the different personalities and working practices that had developed within the Patients Association in the late 1980s. The files have been roughly divided into one group (K/1) reflecting the activities and administration of the Association and a second group (K/2) relating to specific subjects, confereneces, committees and events.

Ownership note

This section comprises all the papers from the second accession received from the Patients Association in 2000. It appears to have originated mainly from the office Linda Lamont.
