Paton visited the Wellcome Research Laboratories at Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, on April 8-9, 1981. The file includes Paton's account ("Visit to Wellcome Research Laboratories at Research Triangle Park") and an unattributed account of an earlier visit (January, 1981) made by Professor W S Peart, Dr C E Gordon Smith, Dr P O Williams and Dr B M Ogilvie. In addition to correspondence, the file also includes 'The Burroughs Wellcome Fund Annual Report for the Fiscal Year to April 30, 1982', and R A Maxwell, "The state of the art of the science of drug discovery - an opinion" (ts), to which Paton responded (30 August, 1983): "You can't expect me to assent to your MS! All the effort and virtue in industry, not even 'goals' in academic life...."
