About this work

Description

Negatives depicting personnel and scenes from the Burroughs Wellcome & Co Dartford site, 1940s to 1960s.

Scenes covered include the erection of new buildings on the Dartford site; day-to-day work in the factory; and such social functions as parties for retiring staff, works' sporting teams, amateur dramatics and summer parties.

The images were taken by members of Burroughs Wellcome & Co staff (Len Dixon and Mac Hood), who acted as unofficial site photographers for the Dartford plant from the 1940s to the 1960s.

The series consists of both glass and standard negatives.

No WF/M/I/H/33 and WF/M/I/H/48 in the sequence.

Arrangement

Original order has been maintained as far as possible. Duplicates have been removed and negatives reboxed. The photographs were previously arranged in boxes and given an "H" number (for "Historical photograph").

Biographical note

Len Dixon (and to a lesser extent Mac Hood) acted as unofficial site photographer for Dartford and, on his retirement, passed a collection of (mainly) negatives to Dr John Reader of Natural Plant Production. Photos of the site and its development were also passed to site Engineers department.

The negatives were transferred along with the other - more official and corporate - Images series, when the Wellcome Foundaton Archive was transferred to the Wellcome Library in 2001.
