About this work

Description

Includes handwritten and printed rules and regulations including considerations and reasons for the establishment of the hospital, lists of Governors and their addresses, establishment staff, legacies and benefactions by date from 1751, property, funds annuities, instructions for applications and related forms, patient statistics and annual statements of account. Also includes Acts of Parliament concerning the hospital.

H64/A/08/003 also includes the Physicians' Report and Statistical Tables back to 1751 which give a background, some case histories (patients names in initials only) and descriptions of general medical and 'moral' treatments, for example:

'we distinctly repudiate the notion of encouraging by our example any return to the cruel method of treatment wghich was formerly practicised...'. 'Balls are given in the Hospital once a fortnight; the male and female patients meet in the centre corridor, which is fitted up for the occasion as a ball-room'.

The Tables are detailed and include post mortem cases by patient for 1850.
