To the House of Representatives : I transmit to thn House of Representatives, with the request that they would lie pleased to communicate it to the Senate, the final report of the Commissioners for the enlargement of the State Lunatic Hospital. This en- largement has taken place in virtue of resolves of the Legislature of 7th April, 183.5, and March 29, 1837, and it consists of two Wings and a Chapel. Thus enlarged, the Hospital building presents a front of three hundred and twenty-four feet, with two wings extending hack- ward, at right angles to the front, a distance of one hun- dred and thirty-four feet each. The front and two wings enclose three sides of a square, and the chapel is constructed on the fourth. Placed on a commanding eminence, the appearance of the edifice is such as he- comes a Public Establishment of this most important char- acter; and the construction and disposition of the interi- or, are believed to combine the latest improvements which have been introduced in the erection of buildings of this description. The Chapel affords accommodation for two hundred and eighty persons; is well adapted for the be- nign purpose for which it was built; and is probably
