About this work
Description
An illustrated history (photographs embedded in a word-processed text) of the property in Berkhamsted purchased in 1937 by Sir Richard Ashmole Cooper. The house was re-named "Shenstone Court" after the former family home near Lichfield, Staffordshire. "In 1947 the Coopers sold the house and grounds to their firm, which following expansion had become Cooper, McDougall and Robertson Ltd, and it became Berkhamsted Hill, the company Research Centre" (Foreword, p. 3). Permission was granted in 1999 for the site to be re-developed as retirement accommodation, and it is now known as "Castle Village" (from which perspective this account is written), and incorporates the original house which had fallen derelict.
The three "famous firms" - or family names - referred to in the title are Dickinson (the paper manufacturer), Cooper and Wellcome. The house was originally constructed 1905-06 as a retirement home for Sir John Evans, son-in-law and successor to John Dickinson, and was first known as "Britwell".
