The improvements consist in connecting the head of the truss to the circum¬ ference spring A, by means of a hinge B, and in annexing to the plate C, which is made in an oblong diagonal form, a steel spring D, which is fastened to it at the lower end with a screw, while the upper end bears against the 5 hinge, and closes or expands according to the degree of pressure made against the truss by the body. By this construction the lower end of the pad is gently impelled against the rupture, and yields to the motion of the body, so as to produce an effect similar to that of the hand when applied to the part affected. The screws answ^ers a threefold purpose; 1st, in securing the steel spring to lo the plate; 2d, by increasing or diminishing the strength of the spring; 3d, by serving as a button to secure the under strap ; the leather covering conceals the plate, and yet gives a free motion to the pad, and the plate is connected with the circumference spring by a small cord E, which prevents the pad from expanding too far. 15 AND BE IT REMEMBERED, that on the same Twenty-seventh day of g June, in the year above mentioned, the aforesaid Thomas Bartlett came ^ before our Lord the King in His Chancery, and acknowledged the Specification o aforesaid, and all and every thing therein contained, in form above written. And also the Specification aforesaid was stamped according to the tenor of 20 the Statute in that case made and provided. Inrolled the Thirtieth day of June, in the year above written.
