Biographical note

The Association of Independent Doctors in Addiction (AIDA) was formed in November, 1981 at a meeting arranged by Dr. Ann Dally. The reason for forming AIDA was the then rapid growth of heroin addiction in the UK, the apparent failure and breakdown of the clinic system and the increasing involvement of independent doctors in the management of addicts. 'Independent doctor' meant a doctor working outside a hospital or drug dependence unit. Half the members were GPs in the NHS and psychiatrists. The Association aimed to improve standards of practice in drug dependence, including acquiring and spreading knowledge in the field.
