About this work
Description
28 December, 1940. Copy letter, Sir R A Cooper to H Tansley Witt, requesting advice on replying to McDougall. "The situation with this man is intolerable, and I feel that the time has come when you and I must stop licking his boots or treating him as an honest worker in the Company's cause."
30 December, 1940. Copy letter ("Eire"), Sir R A Cooper to D S A McDougall, setting out the background to the Irish initiative (blocked by "the hardening of the Irish Government against this country"), and defending Walker-Leigh in his absence abroad. "It is perhaps unnecessary to remind you that during the major part of this period you were acting as General Manager of the Company, and had therefore every opportunity...."
1 January, 1941. D S A McDougall to Sir R A Cooper.
15 March, 1941. Copy letter, Sir R A Cooper to D S A McDougall, referring to propopsed salary increases: "These various increases gave me no little anxiety, because we are living in times when every economy should be sought; but both Mr Witt and I were fully persuaded, after discussion with Mr Walker-Leigh, that his suggestions regarding the proposed increases of salaries were justified by circumstances."
The file also contains a copy letter (23 December, 1940) to W B Thompson, of Berkhamsted, thanking him for satisfactory service "rendered to my Company during your three months' engagement" and referring to an unspecified proposition that warrants "serious consideration" when the Managing Director (Walker-Leigh) returns from Brazil. The author of the letter is not indicated but would appear to be Sir R A Cooper.
