About this work

Description

Press reporting of the lecture and subsequent talk to journalists provoked numerous angry letters from the general public. Doll: "The remarks which were given prominence in the press related to a minor extension of the last paragraphs, in which I was concerned to emphasise that it was far more important at the present moment for the Health Service to concentrate on how to relieve disability in old age and to enable old people to be independent ... than it was to try to extend the duration of suvival in this age group."
