Kirk was Reader in Experiment Zoology at the University of Western Australia, Perth, then Senior Fellow in the Department of Human Biology and Head of the Human Genetics Group, John Curtin School of Medical Research, Australian National University, Canberra, and later Chief of the Human Genetics, Unit, World Health Organisation, Geneva, Switzerland.
