About this work
Description
This documentary follows the extraordinary story of how people who have been blind for many decades get their sight back by a new surgical procedure which involves implanting a lens into a TOOTH and then implanting the tooth in the defective eye; this surgery is called 'OOKP'. One of the patient's teeth is used so as not be rejected by the body. The procedure only works for rare cases of corneal damage and Professor Christopher Liu, consultant ophthalmic surgeon, is the only practioner of this procedure in the UK. Brian who lost his sight to corneal disease undergoes the surgery and we follow his journey. Unfortunately, Brian had a bad experience when he had an operation to attach a detached retina (he had a severe allergic reaction to the anaesthetic) so he is understandably anxious and the tension is palpable. The surgery is in two parts; firstly the adapted tooth is sewn into a pocket in the other eye so that it grows soft tissue. Tissue from inside his cheek is used for a new surface to the eye. During the course of the 3 hour surgery, Brian has a sudden allergic reaction to one of the anaesthetic agents - luckily the operation can still proceed, but he is rushed to intensive care for monitoring. The second part of the surgery is very intricate, taking 4 hours. Other former patients of Liu's testify to the success of the operation. However, Brian's sight does not miraculously come back to begin with - although suddenly while being filmed, his vision improves dramatically. Several months later he can see his children, wife and his surroundings.
