Description

Collection of short papers, mainly on surgical subjects. Author's holograph MSS and corrected typescripts. (1) How and why we breathe. A Paper read to the [Gloucester] Philosophical Society, 19th May, 1885 (26 ff. folio. 32 x 21 cm.). (2) Miscellaneous notes on surgical operations, cases, etc.: partly holograph MSS, partly typescript. 1889-1923 (300 ll. v.s.). (3) Evidence given in a Compensation case for alleged injuries to a finger from carbolic acid. 1898 (XII ff. folio. 32½ x 21 cm.). (4) Haemorrhage from a chronic gastric ulcer: operation, recovery: with a second draft, the first leaf of which is wanting. 1904 (12 ll., 10 [11] ll. 4to. 22½ x 18 cm.). This case was published in the B.M.J., 1904, ii, pp. 120, 121. (5) Presidential Address, Gloucestershire Branch of the British Medical Association, November 17th, 1904. With a corrected typescript copy (50 ff., 23 ll. (last bl.). 4to. 20 x 16½ cm., 26 x 20½ cm.). (6) Malignant disease of the rectum removed by operation: with a discussion on the symptoms and diagnosis of cancer of the rectum. Read to the Gloucester Branch of the B.M.A. Oct. 18th 1906. With a holograph critical letter on the subject from Louis Bathe Rawling [1870-1940] (15 ll., 5 ll. folio. & 4to. 32½ x 21 cm., 20 x 20 cm.). (7) The surgical side of the Discussion on Dr. Kirkland's paper 'Where Physician and Surgeon meet'. With three holograph corrected typescript copies of Cuthbert's 'Surgical criticism of Dr. Kirkland's paper'. 1907 (25 ll., 11 ff. + 3 ff., 8ff. + 3 ff., 8 ff. + 3 ff. + 8 ff. 4to. & folio. v.s.). The 3 ff. contain a Table of symptoms, etc. of gall stones and duodenal ulcers. The Paper by Dr. Robert Kirkland [ -1946] was originally read at the Meeting of the Gloucestershire Branch of the B.M.A., and was reported in the B.M.J. 1907, ii, pp. 8-12. (8) A plea for early operation in Appendix cases. A paper read to the Meeting of the Gloucestershire Branch of the B.M.A. on 15th Oct. 1908. Holograph-corrected typescripts, letters, notes, etc. collected for the preparation of, or connected with this paper. A paper read at the Gloucestershire Branch of the B.M.A. Meeting on 20th Jan. 1910. (10) Some surgical considerations relating to the Workman's Compensation Act. With a case-history and medical evidence in an Action under the Act. 1912. With some holograph corrections and additions (16 ll. + 9 ll. folio. 32 x 21 cm.). The 'Considerations' was published in the 'Medical Magazine', 1912, Vol. XXI, pp. 125-157. (11) Permanent care of feeble-minded persons. An Address to the [Gloucestershire] Charity Organisation Society, 28th March, 1912 (10 ff. folio. 32 x 20½ cm.). With holograph additions and corrections. (12) Pitfalls in practice. Biographical note

The author qualified M.R.C.S. in 1879 and practised in Gloucester where he was senior surgeon of the Children's Hospital. In 1911-12 he was sheriff of his native city.
