Biographical note

The first formal meeting of the ICC ( later the IEA) took place in 1956, at which the terms of reference and aims of the group were agreed and funding issues discussed. A key aim of the group was to foster communication and contact between members throughout the world, particularly in developing countries; therefore membership subscriptions, the Association's only source of income, remained low, requiring external funding sources.

This meeting was funded by a $9500.00 grant from the Rockefeller Foundation, New York, and the IEA continued to successfully attract grants from foundations, governments, individuals and the World Health Organisation (WHO) to enable it to develop and carry out its scientific and educational programmes.

For further detail regarding financial support for the IEA during the first 20 years of the Association, see Pemberton, J. "History of the International Epidemiological Association 1954-1977".
