Biographical note
In 1955 there was a possibility that Professor Hare would either write or collaborate in writing the authorised biography of Fleming. In the event this was undertaken by the French biographer Andre Maurois: however, Hare continued his researches in the history of the development of penicillin and in 1970 published The Birth of Penicillin. He also wrote a number of articles on the subject, one of which, "New Light on the History of Penicillin", appeared in Medical History, January 1982.
