    There were 5 uncertified deaths (3 males and 2 females) and these cases were such that the Coroner did not think it necessary to hold an enquiry. The following table will give the actual number of cases registered in your district each quarter, whether resident or non-resident. Males. Females. 1st Quarter 15 2: 2nd ,. 15 20 3rd ,, 20 17 4th „ 34 3> 84 89 November, 2S deaths; December, 24 ; and March, 22, were the months of greatest fatality. January with 6 deaths; February, June and August 8 deaths each, were the months with the least number of deaths. There were no deaths registered for the weeks ending January 26th May 18 February 23rd August 24th The total number of deaths under one year of age registered was 15 8 males and 7 females (sixteen given by the General Registry Office) as compared with 18 deaths in 1917, and 25 deaths in 1916. This gives an average death rate of 8o'2 per 1.000 births in 1918, as compared with 84-9 in 1917. and 996 in 1916. The Infant Mortality for England and Wales was 97, so that the rate for your district must be considered more than satisfactory, showing practically a gain of 17 points over the rest of the country. This is a matter for congratulation, and one can only repeat the remarks made in last year’s report, that these good figures are certainly in part due to the work carried on by the Health Visitor, who is informed of every birth in the district by the County Medical Officer of Health, and who then visits all the mothers, giving them proper advice as to the bringing up of their infants, such as feeding, proper clothing, cleanliness, sanitation, ventilation, overcrowding, etc, At the same time it must also be emphasised that much good work has been carried an at the Child Welfare Centre, and one must appreciate and give hearty thanks to all those ladies who have voluntarily given so much of their time to this good cause ; and it is here also that the Health Visitor is able to further her work, knowing the early career of tire little infants that are brought here.
