About this work

Description

Exhibits at Wigmore Street and Euston Road

Includes the following:

  • WA/PHO/Hmm/4/1: A Head-Hunter's hut from south east New Guinea, 1920s. V0031352. Previous caption: This hut was exhibited in the Wellcome Historical Medical Museum's Hall of Primitive Medicine. To Wellcome his Historical Medical Museum would relate the development of medicine from ancient times to the present day, using artefacts from around the world. Other spaces in the Museum included a Hall of Statuary, Portrait Gallery and a series of period rooms and reconstructions of historic pharmacies. Ironically, the site of the Museum on Wigmore Street is now actually occupied by a present day pharmacy (John Bell & Croyden).
  • WA/PHO/Hmm/4/2: Figurines in the Hall of Primitive Medicine, Wellcome Historical Medical Museum, Wigmore Street, 1920s. V0031351. Previous caption: From information written on this photograph, the figurines appear to be fetish figures used by medicine men in the Congo.
