Description

Copy article. 'The first Medical Monograph on the Gout' by W. Copeman and Marianne Winder and published in Medical History 1969, 13, 288-93. It relates to a German treatise on Gout from 1534 acquired by the Heberden Library and which is believed to be the earliest treaty published on gout. The treaty it describes is Ob das Podagra moglich zu generen oder nit. Nutzlich zu wissen allen denen, die damit behafft by Dominicus Burgauer, pub Mathiam Apiarium, Gedruckt zu Strassbourg, 1534.
Typewritten pages of poetry about gout, which are a translation of Eyn verantwortung Podagrae vor dem Gichter by Jodocus Hessus, pub. Justus Schaffer, Mainz, 1537, which had been purchased by Copeman in the 1960s. With a letter to Copeman in 1967 congratulating him on his purchase of Mainz' work, which is now held by the Royal College of Physicians in London.
