Prefaced with a note by Ann MacEwen about content. Covers Maitland joining the RAMC and his early experiences both in general and as a doctor, and goes on to discuss his horror at the war (World War I) and some specific medical studies and difficulties. It also covers Muriel beginning work at the Royal Free Hospital, and then the North-Eastern Hospital at Tottenham. There are occasional mentions of literary and medical friends, such as Viola Meynell, Noël Olivier, Sylvia Lynd, Ernest Goffe, and on his death, Rupert Brookes.
