Ruptures of the Utems so generally terminate in death, that 1 believe there are many, even of the pre- sent enlightened generation, wlio never knew, or can scarcely Believe, it terminate in recovery. For proof that such cases, however, have occurred, we can refer to i)r. Douglas’s Ac- count of Mrs. Manning, arid Dr, Hamilton’s (.'ase in his Outlines of Midwifery. The truth of the following may be relied on. March '29th.—Was desired to visit Mrs. W., of a relaxed habit of body, al)out twenty-eight years of age, and in the seventh month of her pregnancy. Nothing material had occurred during the former part of her pregnancy, but a day or two previous to my seeing iier a very profuse liEEinorrhage had taken place, and she had slight pain§ in the region of the uterus. :30th.— The pain vciy materially increased; the haemor- rhage had been very inconsiderable. 'A giyster was thrown up,’which produced a sufficient evacuation j and the follow- ing mixture was prescribed: R. Nit rat. Potassac. Pulv. Tragac. Compos, a 3ij. Aq. Purac, §yj. Tincturae Opii, ^ifs. f, M. The pain continued very violent, and towards the evening began to bear down. Upon examination, I could not dis- cover the os internum the least dilated. April 1st.—On examining, at one o’clock in the morning, I found the membranes ruptured, and the os internum so much dilated, that I clearly discovered the presentation of the shoulder: the hand and arm being situated behind the child. The patient appearing much exhausted, and her at- tendants extremely anxious for her safety, I solicited the as- sistance of a physician, but, before his arrival, endeavoured (during an interval of pain) to bring the arm forward, in ru-Aer to prosecute the turn with the greater facility, which was accomplished mucii sooner, and with greater success, than I expected. 'I'he fretns was highly putrid, and, from ap- pearances, had been some time dead. Waiting in vain for a pain to assist in extracting the placenta, I was forced to in- troduce my hand into the uterus (as the films was perfectly rotten), and withdraw the greater part of it. On the second attempt to bring away the remainder, 1 discovered a very alarming laceration, through the posterior and inferior uart ^0.208. SL
