    N6 25,525 A.D. 1901 Date of Application, 13th Dec,, 1901—Accepted, 6th Feb., 1902 5 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION. Improved Means for Performing Operations of Manicure and Chiropody. I, Frederick Whit-Gould, of Craven House, Northumberland Avenue, Lon¬ don, W.C., Dental Surgeon, do hereby declare the nature of this invention and in what manner the same is to be performed to be particularly described and ascertained in and by the following statement: — This invention relates to means to be employed in performing the ordinary operations of manicure and chiropody and consists especially in applying electrical driving power to suitable instruments which are caused to rotate at a high speed and perform the necessary operations. The apparatus consists of a special adaptable stand carrying a small electric I () motor which is arranged to drive a flexible coil having at its end an instrument adapted to perform the special operations. The instruments are detachable from the coil so that any one of the complete series can be placed in the end of the coil and rotated. The instruments employed consist of circular files, saws, drills, and burnishing and polishing wheels and brushes which are adapted 15 when rotated to cut away all epidermic excrescences such as corns, warts and thicknesses of the skin on the hands and feet, to cut down, trim and polish the nails and to perform all the other operations of manicure and chiropody which are now performed entirely by hand. The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention. 20 Eig. 1 is a side view of the general apparatus, comprising a motor and special connections to the instrument, Fig. 2 shows a special device to be employed in connection with operations upon the toes, and 25 i# ♦ Figs. 3 to T show’ typical rotary instruments according to my invention. Referring to Fig. 1 A is the stand preferably provided with a telescopic tube carrying at its low-er part the small electric motor B. At the upper end of the stand is mounted the small pulley C driven by the band c passing over a pulley on the motor and mounted upon the end of a flexible coil D having a handle d at its end. At the end of the flexible coil or spindle is fitted the instrument E 30 which can be removed and replaced by any other instrument of the set as above described. The motor is driven at a high speed for instance 1,800 revolutions per minute so that the instrument is rotated very rapidly and trims aw’ay any part to which it may be applied or in the case of polishing instruments puts a high polish upon the nails. In order to apply the instruments w’itli ease to corns or other growths upon the inside of the toes the instrument shown in Fig. 2 is employed. This con¬ sists of the two members F arranged somewhat after the manner of forceps having handles or rings at one end. At the other end are formed small rings f ami the apparatus is arranged so that when these rings are inserted, between the toes and the instrument opened to the required extent the toes wall be parted to <nve free access to tne trimming instrument and the part required to be operated upon will project through the rings. The instrument is opened on pressing the handles and is held in open position by the rack fl.
