Biographical note
W M Scharlieb was a barrister in Madras and his wife, (Dame) Mary Scharlieb, qualified as a doctor with the particular intention of treating Indian women in purdah. The Schafers acted as guardians for their children (who were being educated in Europe), 1883-1886.
