Notebook containing notes on materia medica and botany, with copy letters to various correspondents on the same subjects, one or two with pen sketches of specimens. Correspondents include Friedrich August Flückiger (1828–1894), Swiss pharmacologist, Emil Bretschneider (1833–1901), German specialist on Chinese botany, Theodoro Peckolt (1822–1912), Brazilian botanist, Thomas Anderson (1832–1870), botanist at Calcutta, George Bidie (1830–1913), surgeon at Madras, Thomas Edwin Burton Brown (1833–1911), surgeon at Lahore, Henry Fletcher Hance (1827–1886), botanist in Hong Kong, George Henry Kendrick Thwaites (1812–1882), botanist in Ceylon, John Kirk (1832–1922), naturalist and political agent, Joseph Dalton Hooker (1817–1911), botanist, Clements Robert Markham (1830–1916), geographer, Henry Yule (1820–1889), geographer, Moritz Richard Schomburgk (1811–1891), botanist, and William Munro (1818–1880), army officer and botanist. Several of the copy letters are written from Palazzo Orengo, Thomas Hanbury's property at Mortola on the Italian Riviera, and the location of the Hanbury Gardens, for which Daniel Hanbury procured many exotic plants via his worldwide scientific contacts; there is a list of 'succulent plants on terrace at the Palazzo Orengo, May 1869' at ff.42-43.
