    Report of the Medical Officer of Health for the year iqi8. To the Mayor, Aldermen and Councillors OF THfc Lydd Urban District Council. Mr. Mayor & Gentlemen, I herewith present my Annual Report upon the General Health Statistics, Preventive work etc, of the Urban District of Lydd, for the year ending December 31st, 1918. The Statistical returns are based upon two estimates of the population furnished by the Local Government Board, viz:- 2,416 being the estimate of the civilian population for the year 191S, and from which the death rate is calculated, v. 2,707 being an estimate of the local population from which the birth rate is calculated. BIRTHS. The number of births was 43, giving a birth rate of 15.8 per 1,000 population. Males.21. Females.22. Of these 3 illegitimate. DEATHS. The total number of deaths was 30. In this total is included 3 persons belonging to the district whose deaths were registered elsewhere. This gives a death rate of 1 2.4 per 1,000 and a residential death rate of 11.15 per 1,coo. This compares with a rate of 17.6 for England and Wales v. 16.1 for country towns of population from 20,000 to 50,000. The Infant Mortality was 5, total number of births 43. A Mortality of n.6 per cent of births. INFECTIOUS DISEASES. Thirty five cases of measles were notified, Civilian 21, Military 14. The other infectious cases being 14 of Scarlet Fever, 2 Diphtheria, 1 Erysipelus and 1 of Pulmonary Tuberculosis. The Schools were inspected during the outbreak of Scarlet Pever and two suspected cases sent home. Number of cases removed to Hospital: Scarlet Fever 11. Diphtheria 3. Measles 1.
