    N° 6178 A.D. 1893 Date of Application, 23rd Mar., 1893 Complete Specification Left, 21st Dec., 1893—Accepted, 10th Feb., 1894 PROVISIONAL SPECIFICATION. A New and Improved Utilization of Liquorice and other Ingredients for the Manufacture of Certain Medicinal Compounds. I, Edward Mandall, Tower Works, Stockton on Tees, in the County of Durham, Chemist do hereby declare the nature of this invention to be as follows :— I take a strong decoction of the best liquorice root, and after prolonged boiling 5 strain the same ; the strained product is then evaporated in suitable vessels until reduced to the condition of a liquid extract. I further take a quantity of Irish or Iceland moss and boil it for a considerable time in steam-jacketed pans until it forms a thick mucilage after being strained and cooled to 60° Fahren. I also use a proportion of gum arabic, which is boiled carefully in steam pans, until perfectly 10 dissolved, then strained through a fine sieve and this solution I mix with the above mucilage of Irish or Iceland moss, and add in proper proportions the liquid extract of liquorice named above, and chemically pure glycerine, forming a smooth demulcent mixture. I further add to the above mixture the following drugs in proper officinal doses, chloroform, and morphine acetate, syrup of squills, camphor, sjrup 15 of marshmallow, ipecacuanha win% or antimonial wine; these when thoroughly mixed by long agitation with the distillate from star aniseeds, gum benjamin, make a liquid medicinal compound which possesses the valuable properties of the above named medicines in an effective and convenient form. I farther make an improved medicinal lozenge or jujube by exposing the above- 20 named liquid medicinal compound in shallow vessels, to dry warm air in a chamber heated to 120° Fahrenheit. COMPLETE SPECIFICATION. 25 A New and Improved Utilization of Liquorice and other Ingredients for the Manufacture of Certain Medicinal Compounds. I, Edward Mandall, of Tower Works, Stockton on Tees, County of Durham, Chemist, do hereby declare the nature of this invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, to be particularly described and ascertained in and by 30 the following statement:— I take a strong decoction of the best liquorice root and after prolonged boiling strain the same, the strained product is then evaporated in suitable vessels until reduced to the condition of a liquid extract. I further take a quantity of Irish moss and boil it for a considerable time in steam jacketed pans until it forms when 35 strained and cooled to 60° Fahr. a thick mucilage.
