About this work

Description

The Pontecorvo guestbook is a fascinating little book containing signatures and messages from friends and colleagues who visited the Pontecorvo household over the years, from the signatures of the witnesses at their wedding in September 1939 (who were wearing gas masks as war had been declared a few days before) to signatures of people who attended Pontecorvo's 91st birthday celebrations in November 1998. Pontecorvo's daughter, Lisa, kept the idea of the guestbook going after her father's death so there are also loose scraps of paper enclosed with signatures of a memorial birthday party for Pontecorvo in December 1999 and signatures of people who attended the Pontefest celebrations in June 2000. Photos, presscutting, letters and cards are enclosed within the pages.

Includes signatures and messages from some very notable scientists including: Hermann Joseph Muller, Osborne Henry Mavor, Edward Hindle, Ronald Aylmer Fisher, Conrad Hal Waddington, John Burdon Sanderson ("Jack") Haldane, Bruno Pontecorvo, Harold Garnet ("Mick") Mick Callan, Lionel Sharples Penrose, Curt Stern, Cyril Dean Darlington, Francis Harry Compton Crick, Salome Gluecksohn Waelsch, Salvadore Edward Luria, Seymour Benzer, and Charlotte ("Lotte") Auerbach.
