Lavater describes the faces as (from top left to right, bottom left to right) thus: 1. a caricature of a great hero in a state of terror. 2. an energetic man with a mouth expressing stupidity. 3. A plain face in a state of astonishment or terror. 4. A face expressing eager desire, hope and goodness, but no greatness. 5. Tenderness and devotion. 6. Sorrow approaching sublimity
