Description

Collection of extracts from Parliamentary Papers, political documents, etc., 1600-1622: including an account of the death of Robert Cecil, Earl of Salisbury, a tract on the Overbury murder, etc. At the end is a transcript of Isaac Gilpin's 'Essay on Tenant Right', 1689.

c. 1640, 1689

The watermark seems to be a variant of Nos. 525-527, dated 1641, in W. A. Churchill's 'Watermarks in paper in Holland and England [etc.] in the 17th and 18th centuries' 1935.

Purchased 1930.

Finding aids

Database description transcribed from S.A.J. Moorat, Catalogue of Western Manuscripts on Medicine and Science in the Wellcome Historical Medical Library (London: Wellcome Institute for the History of Medicine, 1962-1973).

Notes

This last item is written by a different and later hand. At the end of the text is a note: 'Transcribed out of a coppy of George Birketts of Crooke in December Anno Domini 1689. Per me Georgium Dixon.' This work has not been traced, and it apparently has not been printed. The author was very probably the father of Dr. Richard Gilpin [1625-1700], divine, and M.D. of Leyden in 1676 [see the Dictionary of National Biography].

Ownership note

'Jno Phillipson 1730' has also inscribed his name at the end of No. 29, and has written it on fol. 55v together with that of Elizabeth Green.
