About this work

Description

A carbon copy (signed M H F Wilkins) of a "Report of the Klampenborg Conference", held at Klampenborg, near Copenhagen, 2-5 April, 1938.

Participants listed are: W T Astbury, P Auger, H Bauer, J D Bernal, C D Darlington, B Ephrussi, A Fischer, L Rapkine, H Stubbe, N W Timoféeff-Ressovsky, C H Waddington, and K Zimmer.

The twelve-page document is divided into the following sections:

A. Summary of Bauer's report

B. Summary of Darlington's report

C. Addenda to Bauer's report

D. Addenda to Darlington's report

E. Report of discussion on the division of chromosomes and genes

F. Report of discussion on repulsions and attractions between chromosomes

G. Report of discussion on the external mechanics of nuclear division

Although not noted on the document itself, the report was prepared by Waddington and circulated privately to fellow participants. Much later, Waddington provided an account, based upon this original report, placing the meeting in historical context - see C H Waddington, "Some European contributions to the prehistory of molecular biology," Nature, 221 (1969), 318-21.

Note: the document was found filed in Crick's papers along with Crick's contractual correspondence with the Medical Research Council, and has now been separated for convenience.
