About this work

Description

A painting in Rita Simon's Archaic Transition style, depicting a woman sitting on a cliff above the sea. "Painted by a man, a very long-term psychiatric patient he was discharged into the community with pills and nursing attention. Eventually he attended a day centre two or three days a week, and came to work in my studio. Very paranoid, a very impressive painter, he also dictated and wrote poems. He never broke down so much that he had to go back into hospital. He was a very prolific painter in the Archaic Transition style. Very vivacious painting" Rita Simon. The piece states that the style is Massive Transition on verso but it was placed in this group because this person generally painted in Archaic Transition style. This information is taken from conversations between Rita Simon and Wellcome staff between 1995 and 1997.
