Description

1964:
A range of articles from local and national newspapers regarding a visit by Egyptian pharmacists and doctors on a purchasing mission from the Egyptian armed forces to the Wellcome Chemical Works; opening of the new £53, 000 Wellcome Club at Acacia Hall, Dartford (after its predecessor burnt down in 1962); the reorganisation of Dartford production programmes in response to a typhoid epidemic in Aberdeen (2½ times as much vaccine as was normally produced was sent); reduction of the working week to 40 hours at Dartford, staff appointments, and the introduction of a new pension plan (based on average earnings during the last five years of service) covering 2500 Wellcome Foundation employees.

1965:
Articles from local and national newspapers and pharmaceutical journals re the visit of Miss I. D. Rautianien (Head of the Registry of the Finnish Medical Board of Health) to the Wellcome Chemical Works; visit by staff from the Royal Marsden Hospital in Fulham, London to the plant; annual visit by the Mayor and Mayoress of Dartford to the site; visit by four Ghanaian pharmacists (studying pharmaceutical manufacture on British Council technical assistance scheme fellowships) to the site, and the construction of a cyclic still at the chemical works.

1966:
Articles from local and national newspapers on a range of subjects including filming by the BBC at Dartford for an episode of Whicker's World entitled 'Healing Today'; programmes for school leavers at the plant including the production of training films; a visit by Professor Shun-Ichi Yamada (Head of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Tokyo) to Wellcome Chemical Works; an article from the 'Dartford Chronicle' on the history of the production of insulin, and the demonstration of an ampoule inspection machine at the Quality and Reliability fair at Woolwich Town Hall.

1967:
Clippings from local and national newspapers and pharmaceutical journals regarding a £750,000 extension to the pharmaceutical building of the chemical works at Dartford - thus integrating all pharmaceutical manufacturing, filling and packing operations. The extension was to provide just over 100, 000 square feet of floor space.

1968:
A number of articles from local, national and international newspapers on a range of subjects including: the transfer of a number of departments from London to Dartford starting in the summer of 1969; a significant number of clippings re the installation of a computer division at Dartford leading to more than 100 new jobs, and the successful production on a commercial scale of a synthetic form of emetine for use in the treatment of amoebic dysentery (including an article from Process Engineering detailing the production method.
