About this work

Description

These three notebooks record the names and dates of the planting of trees in the Retreat gardens. The trees are numbered as they are shown on the Retreat Tree Plans, RET 2/1/24/5 and RET 2/1/24/6. Like the Retreat Tree Plans, the Tree Books are organised by Divisions. In each division, the number of the tree is given, with the name of the tree, its botanical name, the date of planting and remarks. Sometimes the date of the tree’s removal has been added in later. The dates of these notebooks must all be c1915; not all are dated but they are all variants of the same version. Each of the volumes includes a small print of the Tree Plan at the front. They comprise: 1. Retreat Tree Book, c.1915, with later annotations recording removal of trees 2. Retreat Tree Book, dated March 1915: this is a rough copy, in a smaller notebook, giving less detail, but with some later annotations, especially for the first few entries, recording removal of trees 3. Retreat Tree Book, c 1915: this is a fair copy in a small notebook which belonged to the Retreat Secretary, A Fred Burgess. Botanical names of trees are omitted and no subsequent annotations made in it
