Biographical note
In 1665 Letters Patent were granted to set up The Scottish Hospital and Corporation, which built on self-help efforts run by Scots from the early seventeenth century and served Scottish people based in London who were in need of medical or financial assistance.. A hospital was opened in the Blackfriars area in 1676; a century later, in 1775, the charter was renewed to cope with increasing demand for the Corporation's services. The hospital and associated tenement buildings were sold in 1874, after which the Corporation - now known as the Royal Scottish Corporation - focussed on helping people in their own homes, something tht it continues to do in the twenty-first century under the name ScotsCare.
William Kinloch, a Calcutta merchant, died in 1812 and left the residue of his estate to the Corporation: it was to be invested in order to proved assistance to Scots wounded in army or naval service. The Kinloch Bequest continues to provide assistance to Scots veterans across the UK.
