Biographical note
The Queen's Nursing Institute dates its foundation from the appointment of trustees in 1887, and so celebrated its centenary in 1987. A press conference and luncheon on 29 January launched the year, at which the announcement was made of the foundation of a chair of community nursing at the University of Manchester. A conference on primary health care took place 21-23 September, organised jointly with Nursing Times and the Royal College of Nursing, and delegates were invited to a reception on 20 September. A service of celebration and thanksgiving took place at Westminster Abbey on 21 September, and a dinner at the Merchant Taylors' Hall on 23 September. Queen's Nurses in the regions were encouraged to hold local celebrations, and a few examples of souvenirs and publicity of these were sent in to headquarters, and can be found in K.4/1. The Visiting Nurse Association of Boston, Massachusetts, USA, was also celebrating its centenary in 1987, and an exchange visit was set up. The only records of this which survi
