About this work

Description

A painting in Rita Simon's Traditional Linear style, depicting a group of musicians playing. It was produced by a patient with obsessional problems at a social psychotherapy centre. Rita Simon saw it as a very good example of a traditional linear artwork: "there is no doubt about the form, but there is no sense of space, for example the trombone will hit the pianist's shoulder. Note also the reflection of the pianist's hand on the piano lid: observations are distilled into thoughts". This information has been taken from notes made during conversations between Rita Simon and Wellcome staff between 1995 and 1997.
