Notes

The Lamaze method is a means of painless childbirth without drugs or anaesthesia promulgated by Dr Fernand Lamaze, head of the Maternity Department of the Centre de Sante Pierre Rouge, which was maintained by the French Metalworkers Union. He derived the idea from a visit to the USSR made with a French medical delegation in 1951, during which he observed psychoprophylaxis in childbirth based upon Pavlovian principles.
