About this work
Description
Formed by amalgamation in Oct 1966 of the Metropolitan and Home Counties Branches, partly arising from the reorganisation of Greater London local government in 1965. (A brief article on foundation of the Branch is in The Medical Officer, 28 Oct 1966). In 1974 the Branch was abolished and four new London Regions established: North West, North East, South East and South West Thames. The Regions practically stopped functioning by the end of 1976, with only the South West Thames Region organising functions. In Mar 1977 the London and Home Counties Branch reconstituted from the NW, NE and SE Thames Regions. Although it was hoped that the restoration of the Branch would stimulate interest in community medicine, and it's structure incorporated special interest groups, the identity and resources of the three component Regions was retained within the current organisation of the Society. The reconstituted London and Home Counties Branch was therefore unofficial. It folded up shortly after due to lack of support at meetings. In 1980 the President suggested a formal reconstitution of the London and Home Counties Branch including all four Regions as a way of revival and giving members an opportunity to be active.
