About this work
Description
A painting in Rita Simon's Traditional Massive style, depicting a hospital garden. Rita Simon stated that the artwork was painted, "by a very imaginative man, a labourer dying in the TB ward. The picture shows the hospital garden, the matron's garden on to which the wards looked out. The matron had an urn put into the garden. In good weather the nurses carried the beds out into the garden for the patients. But this man died very rapidly, a week or two after completing this painting. The yellow stretch behind the urn is an imaginative, deliberate distortion of colour, as it represents an ordinary privet hedge".
The title has been taken from notes made during conversations between Rita Simon and Wellcome staff between 1995 and 1997.
