On the first leaf of the first section the author states: "This paper is the substance of a Thesis presented on the 1st of May, 1880 for Graduation as Doctor of Medicine in the University of Edinburgh and to which a Gold Medal and the Goodsir Prize were awarded". Produced in Edinburgh.
