About this work

Description

These files largely contain HSW's instructions to Johnson on business and personal matters, written while HSW was travelling in Europe between July 1901 and May 1902, following his marriage in June. The files largely contain Johnson's t.s. letters of report to HSW, annotated by HSW and returned to Johnson for action. There are also telegrams from HSW, and some copies of letters referred to in the reports. The files are arranged chronologically, and give an illustration of the relationship between HSW's personal and business life, and his close attention to the smallest of details even during his honeymoon.

Business matters discussed include the design of packaging, advertising, diaries and trade literature; development of new products and marketing of existing products; the development of activities in South Africa by Hector and in Australia by Pearson; distribution and marketing in foreign markets; outbreak of smallpox at the Dartford works and subsequent vaccination of staff; discussion with James Currie re fitments and staff for Gordon Memorial College, Khartoum.

These papers also illustrate the early development of HSW's historical collections. Johnson's letters include reports of books and objects of historical interest collected or noted by CJS Thompson, and confirmation of delivery of materials purchased abroad by HSW.

Major points of discussion only have been listed here.
