About this work

Description

A lock of blonde hair attached to a note by Frances le Marchant dated 1902 describing it as "The Queen, Mary of Scotland's hair". The note states that the hair was given by King George III to Sir William Nicolay, an ancestor of le Marchant's, and by him to le Marchant's grandfather General Hurst. Sir William Nicolay was allegedly the son of Frederick de Nicolay, Principal Page to Queen Charlotte, wife of George III.

A fragment of embroidery attached to a note by Frances le Marchant describing it as "Part of a bedcover worked by Mary, Queen of Scotland. Given to Sir W. Nicholay [Nicolay] by, George 3rd" [sic].
