About this work

Description

Includes letters from Enclosure Commissioners, Joseph Rowntree and William Walker, solicitor, and Case for Opinion of Counsel (with plans of lands in question). The Retreat was attempting to acquire the plot of stay land which separated the Retreat grounds from its newly acquired Belle Vue estate. The situation was complicated because of the complex management of the Stray by the Freemen of Walmgate Stray, who had rights of common, and York Corporation as Trustee. In the event the exchange did not take place (the idea was revived in 1923, with no further success: see the plan at RET 2/1/24/3 which was generated in 1923 in relation to this). However, the Pasture Masters of the Stray did permit, in 1879, an asphalt path to be made over the stray connecting Belle Vue and the Retreat. In 1880 the Retreat was also in the process of buying a plot of land and cottage adjoining Belle Vue estate and fronting onto Belle Vue Terrace. The cottage was to be used for isolation accommodation.
