Biographical note

This fund was established on the occasion of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, 1897 (see Rathbone proposals in F.4/1). From February 1909 it was known as the Queen's Fund. A Central Committee was set up under the Duke of Westminster, co-ordinating local committees' fund-raising. Appeals made for annual subscriptions led to an increase in the Institute's annual income. £5000 was put aside to create a fund for the personal benefit of Queen's nurses and to augment the salaries of the nurses with the longest service. In 1906 a committee was formed (Queen Alexandra's Committee) of 25 ladies who each undertook to collect £100 for the Queen Victoria's Jubilee Institute for Nurses (QVJIN). In 1907 the committee was enlarged to comprise 200 members, who would guarantee £2000 annually to the Institute. On the death of Queen Alexandra in 1925, Queen Mary became patron, and under Queen Elizabeth, widow of George VI, the Committee was known as the Queen Mother's Committee.
